Extinguished

Your eyes are as eloquent as fists,
But I didn’t need convincing.
Didn’t you notice
The permanent bruise,
The garishly subtle yellow, purple, blue,
Like clown makeup running down,
Covering my heart?

Of course you didn’t.
You were too consumed
By our shadows and the interplay
Of mad desires
To care
Or wonder
Why I always wear a shirt to bed
And do not take it off
Until the light is almost out
And we can lie
Together in the dark.
